Hedging and Neutral Language
إزاي تكتب كلام دقيق وهادي من غير مبالغة باستخدام may / might / some / suggest، وتحوّل الجملة المنحازة لجملة محايدة.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
Hedging means using careful words (such as may, might, some, suggest) to show that a claim is not 100% certain. Neutral language is balanced, objective and free from bias.
الدرس ده عن إزاي تكتب كلام عاقل ومحترم ودقيق، من غير مبالغة. بدل ما تقول «السوشيال ميديا بتدمّر كل المراهقين»، تقول «الاستخدام الزيادة ممكن يأثر على بعض المراهقين». الجملة التانية أهدى، وأصدق، وأصعب حد يعترض عليها.
في الكتاب ده في Unit 1: هدف الكتابة في الوحدة بيقول «use neutral and hedging language in evidence-based sentences». هتلاقي جدول Original (Biased) → Revised (Neutral + Hedging) وتمرين Rewrite the Bias (صفحة 17)، والجدول اللي فيه Hedging words وNeutral language (صفحة 19)، وكمان Conditional Structures (Hedging) (صفحة 34).
الفكرة ببساطة: «ممكن… غالبًا… بعض»
Academic writing needs precision, caution and clarity. A good writer does not claim more than the evidence shows.
There are six main ways to hedge a claim. Notice the grammar after each one.
| Tool | Words | Grammar (القاعدة) | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Modal verbs | may, might, could, can | modal + base verb (من غير s ولا ing) | Screens may affect sleep. |
| 2. Hedging verbs | seem, appear, tend | + to + verb | Teenagers tend to compare themselves to others. |
| 3. Reporting verbs | suggest, indicate, imply | Research + verb + that + clause | Research indicates that exercise reduces stress. |
| 4. Adverbs | possibly, probably, perhaps, often, usually, generally | قبل الفعل الأساسي أو بعد is / are (و perhaps غالبًا في أول الجملة) | Walking is probably the easiest exercise. |
| 5. Quantifiers | some, many, most, certain, a number of, several | + اسم جمع | Some teenagers might accept online information without checking it. |
| 6. Phrases | It is possible that… / There is evidence that… / … is likely to… / In some cases,… | + clause (و is likely to + base verb) | It is possible that filters lower self-esteem. |
وفيه أداة سابعة من الكتاب نفسه: الـ conditionals. الكتاب بيقول إن الـ conditionals بتساعد الكاتب يعبّر عن التأكد أو الاحتمال أو الحذر:
- If schools offer counselling, stress levels may fall.First conditional + may = احتمال حقيقي بس مش مؤكد. (الشكل ده من الكتاب صفحة 34)
- If more schools offered counselling, students would most likely feel better supported.Second conditional + most likely = افتراض وفيه حذر.
- If the study had included more schools, the findings would have been more conclusive.Third conditional = بنقول إن الدراسة كان فيها نقص، وده نوع من الحذر في الحكم على الدليل.
سلّم التأكد: من «أكيد» لـ «يمكن»
Hedging words show different levels of certainty. Choose the level that matches your evidence.
| مستوى التأكد | Words | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 100% (absolute — منحاز غالبًا) | always, will definitely, all, never | Social media always harms teenagers. |
| عالي | usually, most, probably, is likely to | Social media is likely to affect most heavy users. |
| متوسط | often, many, can, tends to | Social media can affect many teenagers. |
| قليل | may, might, could, some, possibly | Social media might affect some teenagers. |
يعني الـ hedging مش معناه إنك تبقى ضعيف أو مش عارف. معناه إنك تختار الكلمة المظبوطة على قد الدليل. لو الدراسة قالت 80% يبقى most، لو قالت 20% يبقى some.
يعني إيه Neutral language بالظبط؟
Neutral language is balanced, objective and free from bias. It reports what the evidence shows, without emotion or exaggeration.
| Neutral language بيعمل إيه؟ | Biased | Neutral |
|---|---|---|
| بيشيل الكلمات المطلقة | All teenagers are addicted. | Many teenagers spend several hours a day online. |
| بيشيل الصفات العاطفية | a horrible, toxic app | a popular app that some users find stressful |
| بيبدّل الأفعال القوية بأفعال هادية | Phones destroy concentration. | Phones may reduce concentration. |
| بيذكر المصدر | Everyone knows that… | A 2024 school survey found that… |
| بيعرض الناحيتين | Gaming is a waste of time. | Gaming can be relaxing, but too much of it may affect sleep. |
| بيشيل الـ CAPITALS و !!! | There are NO excuses!!! | There are several reasons to … |
- destroy / ruin ← affect / harm / reduce
- control ← influence
- prove ← suggest / indicate
- everyone knows ← many people believe / research suggests
- is the worst thing ← presents certain risks
- should be banned ← may need guidelines / limits
إزاي تحوّل جملة biased لجملة neutral؟ (4 خطوات)
Follow these steps to rewrite a biased sentence.
- دوّر على الكلمة المطلقة (all, every, always, never) وبدّلها بـ quantifier: some / many / certain.
- دوّر على الفعل القوي أو الصفة العاطفية (destroys, horrible) وبدّلها بكلمة هادية: affects / may harm.
- ضيف modal أو hedging verb: may / might / could / tends to.
- ضيف مصدر لو ينفع: Research indicates that… / Some studies suggest that…
تعالى نطبّق على جملة واحدة خطوة بخطوة:
- Video games make all children violent.الجملة الأصلية: all = مطلق، make violent = حكم قوي.
- Video games make some children violent.خطوة 1: all ← some.
- Video games could influence some children's behaviour.خطوة 2 و 3: make violent ← could influence behaviour.
- Some research suggests that certain types of video games could influence some children's behaviour.خطوة 4: ضفنا المصدر. دي جملة neutral + hedging كاملة.

استخدمه في الكتابة: فقرة JRE فيها hedging
Daily screen time appears to have a negative effect on many teenagers' sleep. One reason is that bright screens may delay the body's natural signal to rest, so students who scroll late at night tend to fall asleep later. Research indicates that teenagers who use their phones in bed often report shorter and lighter sleep. For example, in a survey at our school, most students who kept their phones next to their beds said they felt tired in the morning. However, not all screen use is harmful, since some students use calm apps that might help them relax. Therefore, it is possible that the time and type of screen use matter more than the screen itself. If schools taught students to switch off an hour before bed, sleep quality would most likely improve.
- الجملة الأولى (Justify) = الـ claim، وفيها hedging: appears to + many. مش «all teenagers».
- Reason: may delay + tend to = سبب منطقي من غير مبالغة.
- Evidence: Research indicates that + مثال من survey + most (مش «everyone»).
- التوازن (neutral): However, not all screen use is harmful… = عرضنا الناحية التانية.
- الخاتمة: second conditional + would most likely = حذر في التوقع (زي مثال الكتاب صفحة 34).
- مفيش ولا كلمة absolute ولا intensifier ولا علامة تعجب: ده الـ neutral tone.
- ✗ Screens may affects sleep. ← ✓ Screens may affect sleep. (بعد الـ modal فعل من غير s)
- ✗ Teenagers tend comparing themselves. ← ✓ Teenagers tend to compare themselves. (tend / seem / appear + to)
- ✗ Research suggests to exercise helps. ← ✓ Research suggests that exercise helps. (suggest + that + clause)
- ✗ It may possibly perhaps help. ← ✓ It may help. (كلمة hedging واحدة كفاية، متكترش)
- ✗ Water may boil at 100°C. ← ✓ Water boils at 100°C. (الحقيقة العلمية الثابتة مش محتاجة hedging)
- ✗ «Some research implies» ومعاها «always» في نفس الجملة. ← ✓ متخلطش hedging مع absolute: Some research implies that social media could influence behaviour.
- سؤال «Rewrite using neutral and hedging language»: طبّق الـ 4 خطوات (مطلق ← some، قوي ← هادي، ضيف may، ضيف المصدر).
- سؤال «Which sentence is the most neutral?»: دوّر على الجملة اللي فيها some / may / suggest ومفيهاش all / never / !!.
- سؤال «What is the effect of hedging?»: اكتب It shows caution / uncertainty and makes the claim more accurate and fair.
- متحذفش الفكرة الأصلية: الجملة الجديدة لازم يبقى ليها نفس المعنى بس أهدى.
