Identifying Bias in Media Texts
Bias means presenting only one side of an issue in an unfair way. A media text is any text made for the public: a social media post, an advert, a news article, a video caption. To identify bias, we look at the language and at what is missing.
Unit 1: Living Well in a Complex World (Section A: Social Reflection and Self-Image): «identify bias in media texts».
A biased text is like a camera that shows only the best (or the worst) angle. It is not always a lie, but it is not the whole picture.
| Word / phrase | Meaning / use |
|---|---|
Look for these features in any post or article. Each one is a warning sign.
|---|---|---|---|
| Evaluative / emotional language | كلمات بتحرّك المشاعر: تخوّف، تبهر، تعصّب | amazing, shocking, toxic, disaster, destroy | This SHOCKING habit is destroying your brain! |
| Absolute language | تعميم كامل من غير أي استثناء أو دليل | all, every, never, always, no excuses, everyone | Every healthy person eats this breakfast. |
| Intensifiers | كلمات بتقوّي الكلام وتكبّره | very, extremely, totally, completely | It is completely impossible to be happy without it. |
| Urgency signals | بيضغط عليك تعمل حاجة دلوقتي حالًا | NOW, share before it's deleted, last chance | Share before they delete this! |
Experts confirm… (من غير أسماء) | Doctors CONFIRM it works. |
| Selective evidence / framing | بيعرض جزء من المعلومة بس اللي بيخدم رأيه | صورة واحدة، رقم واحد، حالة واحدة | Showing one perfect photo out of 50 |
| Oversimplification | مشكلة معقدة بيخليها سبب واحد أو شرير واحد | It's all because of… | Pollution is all the fault of one factory. |
| Conspiracy framing | بيقول إن في حد بيخبي الحقيقة عنك | They don't want you to know… | The truth they are hiding from you! |
Media Text
Who made it? Why? What is missing? Where is the evidence? What would the other side say?
- Who?
- Why? هدفه إيه (purpose)؟
- What is missing?
- Where is the evidence?
- What would the other side say?
الكتاب بيسأل في Unit 1 سؤال مهم: «How does the writer's purpose affect the language choices they make?» اللي بيبيع منتج هيستخدم كلمات زي amazing وno excuses، واللي بيكتب تقرير علمي هيستخدم may وresearch suggests.
- Biased: Social media is RUINING an entire generation!
- Neutral: Research suggests that heavy social media use may affect some teenagers' self-esteem.Research suggests + may + some = حذر وعادل.
- Biased: This museum is a boring waste of money.boring
- Neutral: Some visitors feel the museum needs more interactive displays. Some visitors + needs more = نقد عادل ومحدد.
- Biased: Black Friday deals are always fake.always =
- Neutral: Some Black Friday discounts may be smaller than they first appear.some + may = عادل.

"Honestly, my life changed FOREVER when I started drinking my green detox juice every morning!!! I lost 8 kilos in two weeks and I have never felt so amazing. Doctors don't want you to know this, but sugar is literally poison and every single person who eats bread will regret it. If you're tired all the time, it's YOUR fault. No excuses! Only 50 bottles left at 30% off — order NOW before they're gone!"

1: Find ONE example of each feature in the post: absolute language, urgency signals, conspiracy framing.
| Feature | Example from the post |
|---|---|---|
| Absolute language | "every single person who eats bread will regret it" / "No excuses!" |
| Urgency signals | "Only 50 bottles left… order NOW before they're gone!" |
| Conspiracy framing | "Doctors don't want you to know this" | بيقول إن الدكاترة بيخبوا الحقيقة |
2: What is the writer's purpose, and how does it affect the language?
Answer: The writer's main purpose is to sell the detox juice. That is why he uses emotional words such as "amazing" and "FOREVER", absolute claims and urgency signals to push followers to buy quickly without thinking.
3: Is the post balanced or biased? Support your judgement with evidence from the text.
Answer: The post is clearly biased. It shows only one side: the writer's own success. For example, he claims he lost "8 kilos in two weeks" but gives no evidence, and he blames tired people ("it's YOUR fault") without mentioning other causes such as lack of sleep or illness.
- تخلط بين hedging (may / might = علامة عدل) وabsolute (always / never = علامة تحيز).
- Feature + quotation + effect:
- The writer uses absolute language, such as "every single person", to make the claim sound certain, although there is no evidence.
- The post is biased because it shows only… and it does not mention… .

A. Read the post by @FitLifeKing again. Answer the questions.
1. Find TWO evaluative or emotional words in the post.
Show answer
Any two: amazing, FOREVER, poison, regret. 2. Why does the writer use capital letters in "FOREVER", "YOUR" and "NOW"?
Show answer
To make the words look stronger and more emotional, and to grab attention. "Sugar is literally poison." Which feature is this? Explain.
Show answer
Either answer is accepted: oversimplification or emotional language — it turns a complex health topic into one "evil" thing, and "literally poison" is an exaggeration with no evidence.4. What important information is missing from the post?
Show answer
Any reasonable answer: no doctor or study is named, no information about how the 8 kilos were lost, no side effects, and nothing about other healthy habits like sleep or exercise.5. How might this post affect a teenager who reads it? Use the term "social comparison".
Show answer
A teenager may compare himself to the writer and feel lazy or unsuccessful (social comparison), especially because the post says tiredness is "YOUR fault". He might also waste money on the juice.6. Rewrite "If you're tired all the time, it's YOUR fault. No excuses!" in neutral language.
Show answer
Feeling tired can have many causes, such as poor sleep, stress or diet, so it may help to speak to a doctor.
B. Biased or Neutral? Choose and say why.
7. Studies suggest that some teenagers who use phones late at night sleep less.
Show answer
Neutral — Studies suggest + some = حذر ومعاه مصدر.8. Phones are totally destroying our children's brains!
Show answer
Biased — totally + destroying + علامة تعجب.9. Many visitors enjoy the new galleries, although some find the tickets expensive.
Show answer
Neutral — بيعرض الجانبين.10. Every environmental group is lying about climate change.
Show answer
11. This is the ONLY diet that works. Share before it's banned!
Show answer
Biased — absolute (ONLY) + urgency + conspiracy (before it's banned).
C. Read this viral history post, then answer.

"UNBELIEVABLE!!! A new photo PROVES that the Sphinx was carved by a lost civilisation 20,000 years ago! Historians have been hiding this for centuries. Look at the picture: you can clearly see the marks of giant machines. Share this with everyone before it disappears!"
12. Find an example of conspiracy framing.
Show answer
"Historians have been hiding this for centuries."13. Find an example of urgency signals.
Show answer
"Share this with everyone before it disappears!"14. What is wrong with the evidence in the post?
Show answer
It is selective evidence: one photo is used to "prove" a huge claim, there is no named expert or source, and a photo can easily be edited or taken out of context.15. Give the post a fact-check rating (Reliable / Misleading / False) and justify it.
Show answer
Misleading / False — the claim is not supported by any historical source, it relies on one photo, and it uses emotional and conspiracy language instead of evidence.16. Write ONE question a careful reader should ask before sharing this post.
Show answer
Any: Who took this photo, and where was it first published? / Which historians or studies support this claim? / What do museum experts say?

Show answer
E. JRE question.
21. Does social media show life as it really is? Give your claim and support it with a reason and evidence from this lesson's posts.
Show answer
(Claim) In my view, social media often gives an unrealistic picture of life. (Reason) This is because many users post only their best moments and use biased language to look perfect. (Evidence) For instance, @FitLifeKing describes his life as "amazing" and says there are "No excuses", but he hides any difficulties and gives no evidence. However, some accounts, like museum or science pages that name their sources, can be more balanced.
- علامات التحيز: emotional words, absolute language, intensifiers, urgency, missing information, selective framing, oversimplification, conspiracy.
