Role-plays and Pitches
In a role-play you pretend to be a character (a manager, an activist, an influencer…) and speak from their point of view. In a pitch you present a new idea or project in a short time and try to persuade an audience to support it, then answer their questions.
في الكتاب: Unit 8 فيه The Career Pitch Panel: فريق من *educational consultants* بيعرض برنامج تدريب مهني جديد على *a board of investors* (تحضير ٥ دقايق، Pitch ٣ دقايق، والفصل يسأل سؤالين عن *feasibility*). Unit 10 فيه ٣ أنشطة: The Convincing Post (influencer وصاحب متشكك)، The Fast Fashion Trial (محاكمة تمثيلية بـ ٤ أدوار)، وPitch Your Project (pitch دقيقة واحدة لمبادرة استهلاك واعي، والمجموعة التانية تسأل سؤال صعب واحد). Unit 6 (The Wetland Meeting).
Role-play
The secret of a good role-play is to think like your character: What do they want? What are they worried about? What evidence would they use?
The Fast Fashion Trial |
|---|---|---|
| What does my character want?
| What is my character worried about?
| What evidence would they use?
- اتكلم بضمير I / we كأنك الشخصية: *As a factory worker, I…*
|---|---|---|
| believe | I believe this product is worth it. | ✗ I am believing… |
| want / need | You don't need this. / I want new shoes. | ✗ I am wanting… |
| think (رأي) | I think it's overpriced. | ✗ I am thinking it's overpriced. (لكن *I'm thinking about buying it* صح = بفكر دلوقتي) |
| love / prefer / know | I prefer saving my money. | ✗ I am preferring… |
٢) Quantifiers (The Fast Fashion Trial / Pitch Your Project): كلمات بتقول الكمية:
| مع اسم يتعد (countable) | مع اسم مايتعدش (uncountable) | مع الاتنين |
|---|---|---|
| many, a few, few, several, a number of | much, a little, little, a large amount of | a lot of, lots of, some, most, all, no, plenty of |
| Many customers return clothes. | A large amount of water is used. | Most of the responsibility lies with… |
٣) Persuasive language (Career Pitch Panel — من نصيحة الكتاب): *Our programme ensures… / This initiative will bridge the gap… / We aim to provide…*

- From my point of view as a shopper, …
- In my position, I have to think about …
(Influencer)
- I believe this product is really worth it because …
- Trust me, you'll love it.
- Everyone is using it now.
(Doubtful friend)
- I don't think you actually need this. Isn't it just about …?
- Are you being paid to say that?
- What makes it better than a cheaper one?

- I understand why you're doubtful, but …
- I understand your concern, but …
- It isn't fair to blame only … because …

- Let's agree that …
Role-play: The Convincing Post
A (influencer): Hi, Karim! Have you seen my latest video? I'm showing everyone the new SmartBottle. It tells you when to drink water. I believe this product is really worth it because it keeps you healthy.
B (doubtful friend): Hmm. I don't think I actually need this. I already drink water when I'm thirsty. Isn't it just about the money the company pays you?
A: I understand why you're doubtful, but I really use it every day. It has changed my routine, and it looks great too.
B: It looks nice, I agree. But it costs eight hundred pounds! A normal bottle does the same job for fifty. And you said "everyone is using it". That's urgency language, isn't it? It makes people feel they must buy now.
A: OK, that's a fair point. The company did send it to me for free.
B: So you should tell your followers that. I prefer honest recommendations. Then people can decide for themselves.
A: You're right. In my next video, I'll say clearly that it was a gift.
- كل واحد في دوره: الـ influencer بيقنع بحماس، والصاحب بيشك ويسأل *Isn't it just about…?* (من جمل الكتاب).
- Stative verbs صح: *I believe / I don't think / feel / I prefer* ← ولا واحد فيهم في الـ continuous.
- الرد بأدب: *I understand why you're doubtful, but…* و*that's a fair point*.
Pitch
A pitch is short and persuasive. In one to three minutes you explain the problem, your solution, how it works, its impact, and you finish with a clear request. Then you answer questions confidently.
|---|---|---|
| ١. Hook + Problem (The Gap) | إيه المشكلة؟ | Every year, … / Did you know that…? / The problem is that… |
| ٢. Solution | فكرتكم إيه؟ | Our idea is to… / We aim to provide… |
| ٣. How it works | هتشتغل إزاي عمليًا؟ (مين، فين، إمتى) | Students would… / Every month,… / It works like this:… |
| Students will master three practical skills:… / Unlike existing options, this would… |
| If this ran every month, it would… / Many families could… / A large amount of waste would… |
| We are asking you to… / Join us and… / This initiative will bridge the gap… |
That's a great question.*
We would start with only one room and ten volunteers.*
We haven't calculated the exact cost yet, but we plan to ask local businesses for support.*
So the project is realistic and cheap to start.*
نموذج Pitch: Pitch Your Project (دقيقة واحدة)
Speaker 1: How many of you have a broken phone charger or a torn school bag at home? Most of us just throw these things away and buy new ones. That creates a lot of waste and costs our families money.
Speaker 2: Our idea is to open a Repair Café in the school library every first Thursday of the month. Students bring broken items, and volunteers, including parents who are electricians or tailors, help them fix them for free. Unlike existing repair shops, this would also teach students how to repair things themselves.
Speaker 3: If this ran every month, it would save a large amount of money and keep many items out of the rubbish. Even if only a few students came at first, every repaired item would mean one less new product. So join us and give your broken things a second life!
Question from the other group: What if nobody volunteers to repair things?
Speaker 2: That's a great question. We have already spoken to two teachers who can sew and one parent who repairs electronics, so we can start small. After the first month, we will ask older students who learnt the skills to become volunteers too. So the project can grow step by step.
- Solution + How it works: *Our idea is to…* (من جمل الكتاب) + تفاصيل عملية: فين؟
- What's different: *Unlike existing repair shops, this would…* ← جملة من الـ Useful phrases في الكتاب.
- Impact بـ quantifiers: *a lot of / a large amount of / many / a few / Most of us* ← الكتاب طالب جملة واحدة على الأقل، والنموذج فيه أكتر.
- Close: دعوة واضحة (*So join us…*).
- ✗ في الـ role-play تقول رأيك إنت مش رأي الشخصية ← ✓ *As a fashion brand executive, I believe we simply supply what customers demand.*
- ✗ *I am wanting / I am believing* ← ✓ *I want / I believe* (stative verbs)
- ✗ *much customers / many water* ← ✓ *many customers / much water / a large amount of water*
- ✗ pitch كله كلام عام: *Our idea is very good.* ← ✓ قول إزاي هتشتغل وقد إيه هتأثر.
I don't know* ← ✓ *That's a great question. We would start by…*
احفظ الـ pitch كده: مشكلة (The problem is…) ← حل (Our idea is to…) ← إزاي (It works like this…) (Many / A large amount of…) ← تعالوا (Join us / Support us).
(Environmental Activist): *In my view, real change would require the whole industry model to change. A large amount of responsibility lies with brands, because they produce new collections every week. It isn't fair to blame only shoppers, because most of them don't know how their clothes are made.*
٢) Pitch panel (Unit 8): *The Gap ← Skills (three practical skills) ← The Future (Egypt's economic development)* + ٣ كلمات من الوحدة + سؤالين عن الـ feasibility.
٣) Role-play بجرامر محدد (Unit 6 – reported speech، Unit 10 – stative verb): لازم تستخدم القاعدة المطلوبة في كلامك، زي: *The fisherman told us that fishing was their livelihood.*

Show answer
B) Role-play: what would your character say?
7. You are a supermarket manager. The activist says shops must donate all unsold food.
Show answer
*As a supermarket manager, I understand your concern, but we have to think about food safety. A fair compromise might be donating packaged food that is still within its date.*8. You are an environmental activist answering the manager above.
Show answer
*I understand that safety is important, but throwing away safe food while families are hungry is wrong. Many charities already collect food safely every day.*9. You are a fashion brand executive in the mock trial.
Show answer
*Speaking as a brand executive, I believe we simply supply what customers demand. Most shoppers want new styles every week. It isn't fair to blame only brands.*10. You are a factory worker in the mock trial.
Show answer
*As a factory worker, I can tell you that our wages and working hours are set by pressure from brands. Many of us work very long hours to finish orders on time.*11. You are an everyday shopper in the mock trial.
Show answer
*From my point of view as a shopper, individuals have limited power. I don't know how most clothes are made, because labels give very little information.*12. You are a local developer in the Wetland Meeting (Unit 6).
Show answer
*From my perspective, people need homes, and this land is flat and well-irrigated. If we build on only part of it, then birds can still use the rest.*
C) Answer the challenging question after your pitch.
13. "Who will pay for your training programme?"
Show answer
*That's a great question. We plan to partner with local companies that need trained workers. They would pay part of the cost because they benefit from the graduates.*14. "Why would students come to a swap event?"
Show answer
*Because they save money and get useful things for free. We would also make it fun, with music and a small prize for the student who brings the most items.*15. "What if the shared tools are lost or broken?"
Show answer
*Good point. Every borrower would write their name and return date in a simple record, and a small group of volunteers would check the tools every week.*16. "How do you know there are enough jobs for your graduates?"
Show answer
*Renewable energy is growing fast in Egypt, for example with large solar projects, so many companies need technicians to install and maintain the systems.*17. "Isn't one school too small to make a difference?"
Show answer
*It is a small start, but if a few schools copy the idea, the impact grows. Even one shelf can reduce the demand for many new purchases.*
D) Practice prompts with model ideas.
18. (Unit 8) Career Pitch Panel: pitch a training programme in Renewable Energy.
Show answer
Gap: not enough trained solar technicians. Skills: installing panels, maintaining systems, safety. Future: supports Egypt's energy transition and creates jobs. Persuasive: *This initiative will bridge the gap between schools and the energy sector.*19. (Unit 8) Career Pitch Panel: Healthcare.
Show answer
Gap: hospitals need more nursing assistants and lab technicians. Skills: first aid, patient care, using medical equipment. Future: healthier communities and more jobs. Persuasive: *Our programme ensures graduates are ready from day one.*20. (Unit 8) Career Pitch Panel: Information Technology.
Show answer
Gap: companies need cybersecurity and app developers. Skills: coding, network security, customer support. Future: a growing digital economy. Persuasive: *We aim to provide practical training with real projects.*21. (Unit 10) Pitch Your Project: a uniform swap event.
Show answer
Problem: students grow fast and uniforms are expensive. How: once a term in the school hall. Impact: *Many families would save a large amount of money.* Close: *Bring what doesn't fit, take what does!*22. (Unit 10) Pitch Your Project: a tool-sharing library for your neighbourhood.
Show answer
Problem: most people use a drill only a few times a year. How: tools are kept at a community centre and borrowed for a week. Impact: fewer purchases, less waste. Close: *Borrow, don't buy.*23. (Unit 10) The Convincing Post: an influencer promoting fast-fashion clothes.
Show answer
Influencer: *I love this collection, it's so cheap!* Friend: *I don't think you need ten new shirts. Isn't it just about the brand paying you? A cheap shirt has hidden costs: water and factory workers' wages.*24. (Unit 4) Role-play: a brand marketing manager and a parent. Do brands target teenagers unfairly?
Show answer
Manager: we create products teenagers want. Parent: adverts use influencers and urgency to pressure young people. Compromise: clear labels when a post is an advert.25. (Unit 6) The Wetland Meeting: you are the fishing community member. Use reported speech.
Show answer
*The conservationist said that the wetland needed full protection, and the developer told us that people needed houses. But my family depends on the fish and clean water. A fair compromise might be protecting the water and building only on dry land nearby.*
واتكلم بـ *As a…, I…*
- استخدم الجرامر المطلوب: stative verbs (*I believe / I want* مش continuous) وquantifiers (*many / much / a large amount of*).
- Q&A: *That's a great question.* ← إجابة عملية ← ارجع لفكرتك.
