Giving and Justifying an Opinion (JRE)
In speaking tasks you are often asked for your opinion. A good spoken opinion is not just "I agree". You must justify it: say your position clearly, explain why, and support it with evidence. The book calls this JRE: Justify – Reasoning – Evidence.
وفي Unit 1 الهدف بيقول: *express and justify opinions*، وفي Unit 2: *give a structured spoken opinion with reasons*. وكل وحدة فيها JRE questions زي: *To what extent should governments be responsible for the energy transition?* (Unit 5).
J = your clear position (claim). R = the reason that explains it. E = evidence that proves it (from the text, facts, numbers or real examples), and then you link the evidence back to your claim.
| I strongly believe that… / In my opinion,… |
| This is because… / The main reason is that… |
| For example,… / The text shows that… / According to… |
| Link (ربط) | explain how it supports my claim | اربط الدليل برأيك تاني (الكتاب بيقول: *explain how it supports my claim*) | وده معناه إيه؟ | This shows that… / This proves that… |
Evidence must be relevant (connected to your claim) and reliable (true and from a trustworthy source). Personal feelings alone are not evidence.
|---|---|---|---|
| من النص اللي قريته / سمعته | evidence from the text / audio | The text states that teenagers who sleep less feel more stressed. | أقوى حاجة لو السؤال بيقول *Use evidence from the text* |
| رقم أو إحصائية | a statistic / data | By 17, teenagers have spent more time on social media than in school.
| مثال حقيقي من مصر | a real example from Egypt | The Benban Solar Park in Aswan produces clean energy for thousands of homes.
| رأي خبير أو باحث | expert opinion | Doctors recommend eight to ten hours of sleep for teenagers.
| تجربة شخصية أو ملاحظة | personal experience / observation | When I deleted one game from my phone, my marks improved. | لما السؤال بيقول *from your own observations* |
Different questions need different openings. Read the question word carefully: To what extent, Do you agree, Which is more, Should.
|---|---|---|
| To what extent…? (مش بس آه أو لأ) | I believe that, to a large extent,… / To some extent,… / Only to a small extent,… |
| Do you agree that…? | I completely agree that… / I partly agree… / I disagree because… |
| Which is more effective, A or B? | اختار واحدة منهم | In my view, A is more effective than B because… |
| Should…? | I think schools should / should not… because… |
| Why…? / How…? | اشرح السبب أو الطريقة | There are two main reasons. Firstly,… / One way is to… |
- To a large extent, screen time affects teenagers' sleep. (رد على To what extent)
- I partly agree that sport is the best leisure activity.

- I strongly believe that shops should donate unsold food.
- It seems to me that brands influence teenagers more than parents do.
- This is mainly because apps use autoplay to keep users online.
- For example, the text states that notifications damage concentration.
- This shows that reducing notifications could help students study better.
You can make your opinion strong (I am convinced that…) or careful (It seems that… / This may…). Careful language is called hedging. It is useful when the evidence is not 100% certain.
لو الدليل مش أكيد استخدم كلمات «تهدّي» الرأي زي *may / might / could / it seems*.
|---|---|---|
| قوي جدًا | I am convinced that… / There is no doubt that…
| عادي وواضح | I believe that… / In my opinion,…
| حذر (hedging) | It seems that… / This may… / I tend to think that…

(Model Answer)
In my opinion, social media creates unrealistic expectations to a large extent, especially for teenagers.
This is mainly because people usually post only the best moments of their lives. They choose the perfect photo, add a filter and hide the boring or difficult parts. So when we scroll, we compare our real, ordinary day with someone else's "perfect" day.
For example, the text explains that constant social comparison can make young people feel that their lives are less successful. I have also noticed this among my friends: a classmate of mine felt sad because her weekend did not look as exciting as the trips she saw online.
This shows that the problem is not the app itself but the selected picture it shows us. However, I think we can reduce this effect if we remember that a post is not the whole story.
So, overall, I believe social media does create unrealistic expectations, and we need to use it mindfully.
- J (الجملة الأولى): رأي واضح وبدرجة (*to a large extent*) لأن السؤال *To what extent*.
- R: *This is mainly because…* وشرح السبب بخطوات بسيطة (بيختاروا أحلى صورة، فلتر، بيخبوا الجزء الممل).
- E: دليلين: واحد من النص (*the text explains that…*) وواحد من الملاحظة الشخصية زي ما السؤال طالب (*from your own observations*).
- الربط: *This shows that…* رجّع الدليل للرأي.
ودي إجابة أقصر (٤ جمل بس) لسؤال من Unit 1 برضه: *Which is more effective for managing stress: family support or individual activities?*
(J) I believe that family support is more effective than individual activities for managing stress. (R) This is because talking to someone who loves you helps you understand the problem, not just forget it for a while. (E) For instance, when I was worried about my exams, my father helped me make a study timetable, and my stress went down. (Link) This shows that support from family can solve the cause of stress, while activities like gaming only give a short break.
- استخدم مقارنة (*more effective than*) لأن السؤال *Which is more…*.
- ✗ *I agree.* (وتسكت) ← ✓ *I agree that schools should limit phones because… For example,…*
- ✗ *I am agree.* ← ✓ *I agree.* (agree فعل، من غير am)
- ✗ *In my opinion, I think…* ← ✓ *In my opinion,…* أو *I think…* (واحدة بس، الاتنين مع بعض تكرار)
- ✗ *Because social media is bad.* (جملة ناقصة) ← ✓ *I think social media can be harmful because it wastes time.*
Do not read from a full script*).
That's an interesting question.*
So, that's why I believe…*
Do you agree that taking small actions is more effective than waiting for large-scale change? Give evidence to support your claim.
الحل: ابدأ بـ *I (partly) agree that…* ← سبب ← دليل (مثلًا حملة تنضيف النيل اللي بدأت بخمس أصحاب وبقت مئات المتطوعين) ← *This shows that…*.
"Brands influence teenagers more than parents do." Move and justify your opinion.
الحل: *I agree, because teenagers spend hours on social media where brands advertise all the time. For example, many of my friends want a certain brand of trainers only because famous influencers wear them. This shows that brands can sometimes speak louder than parents.*
٣) أسئلة المناقشة اللي فيها Evaluate: زي *Do you think young people can make a real difference in solving the climate crisis? Why or why not?* — كلمة *Why or why not* معناها: لازم سبب، مش آه أو لأ بس.
