Main Argument and Supporting Points

English

In an argument text (an opinion article, an essay, a discursive text), the main argument is the writer's central opinion. The supporting points are the reasons and the evidence the writer gives to make us believe it.

Unit 1: Living Well in a Complex World وفي جدول التقييم الذاتي آخر Unit 1 الكتاب بيقول بالنص: «identify the main argument and supporting points in an opinion article». What is the writer's main argument about…?

Supporting Points

The topic is what the text is about (one or two words). The main argument is what the writer thinks about the topic (a full sentence with an opinion). The supporting points explain why.

social media
Schools should teach students how to use social media wisely instead of banning it.
Bans do not work because teenagers find other ways online.
A survey found that 70% of students used social media at school despite a ban.
This shows that rules alone cannot change habits.

Most argument texts follow the same plan: introduction with the main argument → body paragraphs, each with one supporting point and evidence → a counter-argument and a reply → a conclusion that restates the main argument.

Introduction (أول فقرة)الكاتب بيشد انتباهك، وغالبًا آخر جملة فيها هي الـ main argumentIn my view / I believe / It is clear that / This article argues that
Body paragraph 1Supporting point 1 + دليل + شرحFirst / Firstly / The main reason is
Body paragraph 2Supporting point 2 + دليل + شرحFurthermore / Moreover / In addition / Another reason
Counter-argumentرأي الناس اللي مخالفين + رد الكاتب عليهم (rebuttal)Some people argue / Critics claim … However / Nevertheless
In conclusion / To sum up / Therefore / Ultimately

لما تلاقي «Some people argue that banning phones is the answer» متفتكرش إن ده رأي الكاتب.

Writers support their argument with different kinds of evidence: statistics, research findings, expert opinions, examples, personal experience and logical reasons.

Statistics (أرقام)نسبة أو رقمmore than 80% of teenagers fail to meet daily activity levels
Research (دراسة)Research shows / A study foundA study found that teenagers who slept fewer than seven hours felt more anxious.
Expert opinion (رأي خبير)According to … / … saysAccording to psychologists, comparison damages self-image.
Example (مثال)For example / such as / for instanceFor example, countdown clocks make shoppers buy quickly.
Personal experience (تجربة)I / my / when I …When I deleted the app for a week, I slept better.
Logical reason (منطق)because / since / this meansBecause apps earn money from our time, they are designed to keep us scrolling.

How convincing do you find this evidence?

I believe / In my view / should / must / it is time to / the real problem is.
  • Extreme (متطرفة): فيها كلمات زي always / never / all / only / completely والنص مقالش كده. ✗
  • Opposite / not mentioned:

(Opinion Article)

Filters Are Not the Enemy — Comparison Is

(1) Every few months, a new headline blames photo filters for teenagers' low self-esteem, and some worried parents respond by deleting their children's apps. In my view, this misses the point. The real damage to young people's self-image comes from the habit of constant comparison, and the answer is not a ban but stronger digital awareness.

(2) First, comparison, not technology, is what makes teenagers feel inadequate. A survey of 1,200 secondary students found that those who often compared their bodies with influencers' photos were twice as likely to report feeling unhappy with their appearance. Interestingly, students who used the same apps mainly to chat with friends did not show the same pattern. This suggests that the problem lies in how teenagers use social media rather than in the apps themselves.

(3) Furthermore, bans rarely change behaviour for long. When one school in the survey blocked social media on its network, more than half of its students simply switched to mobile data. By contrast, a school that ran a six-week media literacy course, in which students analysed edited advertisements and discussed how images are staged, saw a clear drop in negative comparison. Skills stay with students when rules disappear.

(4) Some people argue that platforms, not schools, should solve the problem, since they profit from our attention. It is true that companies must design their apps more responsibly. However, waiting for them to change could take years. Teenagers need protection now, and the quickest protection is knowledge.

(5) Ultimately, deleting an app may feel like a solution, but it only hides the problem. If we teach young people to question what they see online, they will carry that confidence into every screen they ever use.

1 — Choose the correct answer (main idea):

The main argument of the article is that ______

a. photo filters should be banned on all social media apps

b. teenagers should stop comparing themselves by deleting social media

c. digital awareness, not bans, is the best way to deal with the harm caused by comparison

d. social media companies are the only ones responsible for teenagers' self-image

(d) فيها only وده رأي الـ some people اللي الكاتب رد عليه.

2 — Analyse: What evidence does the writer give to support…?

Q: What evidence does the writer give to show that bans do not work? How convincing is it?

Model answer: The writer explains that when one school blocked social media on its network, more than half of its students simply switched to mobile data. This is quite convincing because it is a real example from a survey, and it shows that students can easily get around rules. However, it is only one school, so more examples would make it stronger.

3 — JRE question:

Q: To what extent do you agree that teaching skills is better than banning apps? Justify your answer with evidence from the text.

Model answer: I largely agree with the writer that teaching skills is more effective than banning apps. This is because a ban only works while the rule exists, but a skill stays with a person for life. According to the text, a school that ran a six-week media literacy course saw a clear drop in negative comparison, while a school that blocked social media saw students switch to mobile data. This shows that knowledge changes behaviour more than rules do.

الإجابة دي: J = I largely agree … ، R = This is because … ، E = According to the text … (This shows that …).

Designed to Keep You Scrolling

(1) Many people blame themselves when they spend three hours on their phones instead of studying. They think they simply lack willpower. I believe this view is unfair. Most popular apps are carefully designed to capture our attention, so taking control means changing the design around us, not just trying harder.

(2) To begin with, apps make money from our time. The longer we stay, the more advertisements we see. For this reason, designers use features such as infinite scroll, which removes any natural stopping point. A page that never ends gives our brains no signal to put the phone down.

(3) In addition, notifications are timed to pull us back. A former designer at a large technology company once admitted that red notification icons were chosen because red creates a feeling of urgency. Even when the message is unimportant, we feel we must check it.

(4) Critics say that blaming apps is just an excuse and that responsible people should control themselves. Personal responsibility certainly matters. Nevertheless, when the battle is between one tired teenager and a team of experts paid to win his attention, it is hardly a fair fight.

(5) The solution, therefore, is practical. Turning off non-essential notifications, setting daily time limits and keeping the phone out of the bedroom can change the environment so that the better choice becomes the easier choice.

  1. 7. The main argument of the text is that ______ a. people who spend hours on their phones lack willpower b. apps are designed to capture attention, so users should change their digital environment c. technology companies should be banned from using notifications d. teenagers should never use their phones before studying

    Show answer

  2. 8. Paragraph 3 mainly supports the writer's argument by ______ a. describing how infinite scroll works b. giving an expert's example of how notifications are designed to pull users back c. arguing that red is the most attractive colour d. suggesting that people should turn off their phones

    Show answer
b — الفقرة 3 فيها supporting point (notifications) ودليل من خبير سابق (a former designer). (a) ده الفقرة 2.

  4. 10. Find a sentence in paragraph 1 that states the writer's main argument.

    Show answer
«Most popular apps are carefully designed to capture our attention, so taking control means changing the design around us, not just trying harder.» I believe this view is unfair، وفيها الرأي والحل. (لو كتبت الجملتين مع بعض «I believe this view is unfair. Most popular apps…»
  5. 11. What counter-argument does the writer mention, and how does he respond to it?

    Show answer
The writer mentions that critics think blaming apps is an excuse and people should control themselves. He responds that personal responsibility matters, but one tired teenager cannot easily win against a team of experts paid to win his attention.
  6. 12. State whether the statement is True (T) or False (F). Justify your answer. The writer believes that personal responsibility is not important at all.

    Show answer
False — Justification: «Personal responsibility certainly matters.»
  7. 13. State whether the statement is True (T) or False (F). Justify your answer. According to the writer, infinite scroll removes a natural point at which users might stop.

    Show answer
True — Justification: «infinite scroll, which removes any natural stopping point.»
  8. 14. Which type of evidence does the writer use in paragraph 3? a. a statistic b. a personal experience c. an expert's statement d. a survey

  1. 19. In the text «Designed to Keep You Scrolling», how convincing is the writer's evidence? Justify your answer.

    Show answer
Model: The evidence is partly convincing. The example of the former designer is strong because he worked inside the industry and knows how apps are designed. However, the writer gives no statistics about how much time people actually lose. Therefore, a study or survey would make the argument more convincing.
  2. 20. Write the main argument of «Filters Are Not the Enemy — Comparison Is» in your own words in ONE sentence.

    Show answer
Model: The writer believes that teenagers feel bad about their appearance mainly because they compare themselves with others online, so schools should teach them media skills instead of banning apps.
  3. 21. Add ONE more supporting point (with evidence or an example) that the writer of «Designed to Keep You Scrolling» could use.

    Show answer
Model: Another supporting point is that apps reward us with likes, which work like small prizes. For example, many teenagers check their posts again and again to see how many likes they have received.
  4. 22. To what extent are users responsible for the time they spend on apps? Use evidence from the text.

    Show answer
Model: Users are partly responsible, but not fully. The writer admits that «personal responsibility certainly matters». However, he explains that apps use infinite scroll and red notifications to pull us back. This shows that users need to change their settings, because willpower alone is not enough. — J + R + E + شرح.
