The Lost World · Chapter 6: Malone's Night Adventure

English

Chapter 6 comes after Malone sees smoke near the lake from the tree: now the group is split, and the ape-men finally appear.

That evening Malone draws a map of the plateau, and Malone names the lake Lake Gladys after the woman he loves. Malone feels restless. He wants to prove that he can do more than write notes, so he leaves Fort Challenger alone at night with a rifle, food and a small lamp.

At the lake he sees a huge stegosaurus, then a giant meat-eating dinosaur chases him. He falls into a deep pit. The pit is a trap made by people, so now he has proof that humans live on the plateau.

When he finally gets back to camp, it is empty and there are signs of a struggle. That night Lord John comes back alone. He tells Malone that ape-men captured Challenger, Summerlee and himself, that their chief looks like Challenger, and that they also hold human prisoners. Lord John escaped. Malone now understands that real courage means going into danger to help other people, and he agrees to go with Lord John to rescue them.

فقال: “Lead the way.”

الـ ape-men خطفوا التلاتة: Challenger وSummerlee وLord John.

  • “Lake Gladys,” I said.
  • “…pride kept me moving.”
  • “living proof of a world that should have disappeared”الـ stegosaurus دليل حي على كلام Challenger.
  • “a trap made by intelligent hands”الحفرة مش طبيعية، دي فخ عملته إيد ذكية.
  • “I felt completely alone.”
  • “Not human as we are, but not simply animals either.”
  • “Real courage was going back into danger because other people needed you.”

Courage (true and false): At first Malone thinks courage means doing something dangerous alone to prove himself. By the end he learns that real courage means helping others.

Growing up (maturity): Malone's mistake teaches him an important lesson. He looks back and calls his solo journey “childish”.

Evidence and discovery: The stegosaurus and the pit are both evidence. One proves that prehistoric animals live, and the other proves that people live on the plateau.

Danger and isolation: The plateau is beautiful but deadly. When the group is split, Malone feels completely alone.

Teamwork and loyalty: Lord John escapes, but he does not run away. He comes back for Malone and plans to save the others.

Chapter Summative —

1. Answer the following questions.

Q1. Explain why Malone decides to leave Fort Challenger alone at night.

Malone leaves Fort Challenger alone because he feels restless and wants to prove that he can contribute more than notes and maps. He also wants to examine the signs of human life, such as the smoke he saw near the far side of the lake. His pride is a big part of his decision.

Q2. How does the deep pit give Malone evidence that humans live on the plateau?

The pit is not natural. Its sides are too straight, and there are old sharp stakes at the bottom. This shows that it is a trap made by intelligent hands. Together with the smoke he saw from the tree, the pit proves that people really live on the plateau.

Q3. Explain what Malone learns from Lord John about the disappearance of Challenger and Summerlee.

Lord John tells Malone that ape-men dropped from the trees before dawn and attacked the camp. They are covered with reddish hair, walk upright, carry clubs and stones, and tie their prisoners with vines. They captured all three men, but Lord John escaped. Their chief looks like Challenger, so they treat Challenger better than Summerlee. They also have human prisoners.

Q4. How does Malone's solo adventure develop his character?

At the start, Malone is proud and restless, and he wants to show that he is brave. His night journey nearly kills him and leaves him alone when his friends are captured. This experience makes him more mature. He calls his journey “childish” and learns that real courage is going back into danger to help others.

Real courage…

Q5. Analyze how pride influences Malone's decision to continue traveling alone even when he begins to feel unsafe.

Malone admits that “the farther I traveled, the more foolish my decision seemed”. His mind tells him to go back, but his pride is stronger than his good sense. He does not want to return without proving himself, so he keeps walking into the dark forest. This shows that pride can make a person ignore danger, and it leads directly to the attack and his fall into the pit.

استخدم جملة pride kept me moving.

Q6. Analyze the significance of Lord John's return and the news that Challenger and Summerlee have been captured.

Lord John's return is important for three reasons. First, it ends Malone's loneliness and gives him a strong partner. Second, it seems to explain the mystery of the strange footprints and missing food, because the ape-men are probably the creatures that were watching them. Third, it creates a new goal for the story, which is the rescue. It also changes Malone, because he decides to go into danger for others.

Q7. Evaluate Malone's decision to explore alone. Was it brave, reckless, or a mixture of both? Support your answer.

I think Malone's decision was a mixture of both, but it was more reckless than brave. It needed courage to walk through a forest of dinosaurs at night, and it gave the group useful evidence about the pit and the people. However, he went without telling anyone, only to prove himself, and he was nearly killed by a predator. Because he was away, he could not help when the ape-men attacked.

Q8. Evaluate Malone's decision to name the lake after Gladys. What does it suggest about his motivation at this stage?

Naming the lake “Lake Gladys” is a romantic and natural choice, because she is the reason he wanted adventure. However, it suggests that his motivation is still personal. He is still trying to impress Gladys and become the hero she wants. This is why he then goes out alone to prove himself.

JRE 1139 words
Task: Has Malone become more mature by the end of this chapter? (Justify / Reasoning: how his idea of courage has changed / Evidence: his actions or thoughts before and after the night journey)

Justify: Yes, I believe Malone has become more mature by the end of this chapter.

Reasoning: Before the night journey, Malone thinks that courage means doing something dangerous alone to prove himself. After the journey, he understands that this kind of courage is selfish and childish. He learns that real courage means facing danger because other people need you. This change in his ideas shows that he has grown up.

Evidence: Before the journey, he feels restless and wants to prove that he can contribute more than notes and maps. He continues even when his decision seems foolish because “pride kept me moving”. After he falls into the trap and finds the camp empty, he calls his solo journey “childish”. Finally, he agrees to follow Lord John back into danger to rescue his friends and says, “Lead the way.”

  • Evidence فيه before (restless, pride) وafter (childish, Lead the way).
JRE 2167 words
Task: Does the chapter support the idea that real courage means helping others rather than proving yourself? (Reasoning: the difference between the solo journey and the decision to return into danger with Lord John / Evidence: both parts of the chapter)

Justify: Yes, the chapter clearly supports the idea that real courage means helping others rather than proving yourself.

Reasoning: Malone's solo journey and his decision to go with Lord John are both dangerous, but they are very different. The solo journey comes from pride, and it helps no one. In fact, it nearly kills him and leaves him away from his friends when they are attacked. The second decision comes from loyalty, because his friends and the human prisoners need him. The writer shows that only the second kind is real courage.

Evidence: In the first part of the chapter, Malone leaves camp secretly to prove himself, is chased by a huge predator and falls into a pit. When he returns, his friends have been captured and he feels “completely alone”. In the second part, Lord John returns, explains that the ape-men also hold human prisoners, and says, “We must try.” Malone then thinks that real courage is going back into danger because other people need you.

  • اقتباسات قصيرة: “completely alone”، “We must try.”
