Reporting Other People's Views
In discussions, debates and presentations you often need to tell others what someone else said or thinks: an expert, a character in a text, a classmate or your group. We do this with reporting verbs (said, explained, warned…) and reported speech.
في الكتاب: Unit 5 بيقول في هدف الكلام: *employing reported speech to present the viewpoints of others*، وفيه نص *Young Egyptians Taking Action for Our Planet* مليان أفعال زي *said, added, told, explained, replied, warned, encouraged, reminded*.
JRE: *The engineer explained that the heater could cut bills by up to forty percent.* ← كلام خبير بيقوّي رأيك.
The developer told us that people needed homes, but…*
Nour said that one person can't stop climate change. However,…*
Ali suggested starting with a clean-up, and everyone agreed.*
1. Present reporting (for opinions that are still true now, often from texts or experts): *The writer argues that…* / *According to Dr Hussain,…* 2. Past reported speech (for what someone said at a certain time): *Omar said that his team had designed a heater.*
Reported speech بالماضي | |
|---|---|---|
| الفعل | argues / claims / believes / suggests / explains | said / told / explained / warned / added |
The text suggests that teenagers need more sleep. | Farida said that she had started a Nile clean-up. |
مثال: *According to the conservationist, migratory birds depend on wetlands.* سهلة ومظبوطة ومناسبة جدًا كدليل.
Choose the reporting verb that shows how the person spoke: Did they explain, warn, suggest, claim or agree? Each verb has its own pattern.
|---|---|---|---|
| say | قال | (that) + جملة — من غير شخص (أو *said to* + شخص) | She said (that) the river was changing. |
| tell | قال لـ | شخص + (that) + جملة | He told the audience (that) his team had designed a heater. |
| explain | شرح / وضّح | (that) + جملة | He explained that the device could reduce bills. |
| add | أضاف | (that) + جملة | She added that solutions were being developed. |
| reply | رد | (that) + جملة | Omar replied that the materials cost less than 3,000 pounds. |
| claim | ادّعى (ومش متأكدين إنه صح) | (that) + جملة | The post claimed that the collection was 100% sustainable. |
| warn | حذّر | (that) + جملة | She warned that the river was changing rapidly. |
| argue | جادل / قال كحجة | (that) + جملة | The farmer argued that he needed more land. |
| suggest | اقترح | -ing / (that) + someone + فعل | Ali suggested starting with a clean-up. |
| encourage | شجّع | شخص + to + فعل | She encouraged everyone to take action. |
| remind | فكّر حد بحاجة | شخص + (that) + جملة | She reminded the delegates that Egypt was well positioned. |
| agree / disagree | وافق / رفض | (that) + جملة | Mariam agreed that young people needed support. |
| ask | سأل | (شخص) + if / whether / wh- + ترتيب جملة عادية | A journalist asked him whether the technology was affordable. |
say مبييجيش بعده شخص على طول: ✗ *She said me that…* ← ✓ *She said that…* أو ✓ *She said to me that…* أو ✓ *She told me that…*. وtell لازم بعده شخص: ✗ *He told that…* ← ✓ *He told us that…*
|---|---|---|
| present simple | past simple | "Fishing is our livelihood." ← he said fishing was their livelihood. |
| present continuous | past continuous | "I am trying…" ← she said she was trying… |
| past simple / present perfect | past perfect | "We designed / have designed a heater." ← he said they had designed a heater.
| will | would | "We will lose our income." ← they said they would lose their income. |
| can | could | "We can protect the wetland." ← she said they could protect the wetland. |
My livelihood is at risk," he said.* ← *He said that his livelihood was at risk.*
٣) كلمات الوقت والمكان تتغير: now ← then، today ← that day، tomorrow ← the next day، yesterday ← the day before، this ← that، here ← there.
والأسئلة: نستخدم if / whether لسؤال Yes/No، وكلمة السؤال لـ wh-، ونرجّع الترتيب لجملة عادية (من غير do/did): *"Is it affordable?"* ← *He asked if it was affordable.* / *"What's your favourite hobby?"* ← *She asked what my favourite hobby was.*
إمتى منعملش backshift؟ لو المعلومة لسه صحيحة أو حقيقة عامة: *The conservationist said that migratory birds depend on wetlands.* (ده لسه صح، فمش لازم نغير).

The Wetland Meeting
بعد الـ role-play في Unit 6 الكتاب بيقول: *agree as a group on ONE final decision and be ready to explain your reasons to the class*.
Our group held a meeting about the future of a wetland that migratory birds depend on. Each of us played a different role.
First, the conservationist said that the wetland needed full protection. She explained that thousands of birds stopped there every year to rest and feed, and she warned that they would lose a vital part of their journey if it disappeared.
Then, the local developer told us that many families in the area needed homes. He argued that part of the land was flat and well-irrigated, so it was perfect for building. He also asked whether the birds really needed the whole wetland.
After that, the member of the fishing community reminded everyone that her family depended on the wetland's fish and clean water for their daily income. She said that new buildings could pollute the water.
Finally, after a long discussion, we agreed that a fair compromise was to protect the water and the main bird areas, and to allow a small number of houses only on dry land at the edge. The developer suggested adding a green zone between the houses and the water, and everyone agreed.
So our final decision protects the birds and the fishermen, and it still gives some families new homes.
