Vocabulary in Context
إزاي تفهم معنى كلمة صعبة من الكلام اللي حواليها من غير قاموس، وتجاوب أسئلة «closest in meaning to» والمرادفات والأضداد.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
Vocabulary in context means guessing the meaning of a new word from the words and sentences around it. The context is like a set of clues.
في الامتحان مفيش قاموس. وأكيد هتقابل كلمات أول مرة تشوفها. الدرس ده بيعلمك تبقى «محقق»: تدوّر على الأدلة (clues) اللي حوالين الكلمة علشان تعرف معناها.
الأسئلة دي موجودة في كل الوحدات وفي المراجعات. أمثلة لشكلها في الكتاب: «What does verified mean in this context?»، و«The expression "low-pressure" in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to…»، و«The underlined adjective is closest in meaning to…»، وكمان «Match the following words with their meanings» و«Find a word in the text that means…» و«find antonyms / synonyms».
كلمات كتير ليها أكتر من معنى. كلمة spoil مثلًا معناها «يبوظ» مع الأكل (Milk spoils quickly) ومعناها «يدلّع» مع الأطفال (Don't spoil the child). السؤال بيقولك «in this context» علشان عايز المعنى اللي في الجملة دي بالذات، مش أشهر معنى للكلمة.
أنواع الأدلة (Context Clues)
There are five main kinds of clues: definition, synonym, antonym (contrast), example, and general sense. Word parts (prefixes and suffixes) can help too.
| نوع الدليل | بيبان إزاي | كلمات بتدلّك | مثال (الكلمة الصعبة bold) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Definition (تعريف) | الكاتب نفسه بيشرح الكلمة | which means / that is / is called / or / بين شرطتين أو قوسين أو فاصلتين | The coral turns white, a process known as bleaching. |
| Synonym (مرادف) | الكاتب بيستخدم كلمة معناها قريب في نفس الجملة أو اللي بعدها | also / and / in other words / like | The papyrus is fragile. It is so delicate that it can tear. |
| Antonym / Contrast (عكس) | الكاتب بيقارنها بعكسها | but / however / unlike / while / instead of / not … but | Unlike his reluctant classmates, Omar was eager to join. |
| Example (أمثلة) | الأمثلة بتوضّح المعنى العام | such as / for example / including / like | Renewable sources, such as sun and wind, never run out. |
| General sense (منطق الجملة) | تفهم من الموقف كله | مفيش كلمات معينة | After the long march, the soldiers were exhausted and fell asleep at once. |
| Word parts (أجزاء الكلمة) | prefix أو suffix معروف | un-, dis-, re-, -less, -ful, -able | unreliable = مش موثوق، careless = مهمل |
- The coral turns white, a process known as bleaching.تعريف: «a process known as» بتقولك إن bleaching = تحوّل المرجان للأبيض (ابيضاض).
- Mindfulness involves paying deliberate attention — on purpose, not by accident — to the present moment.تعريف بين شرطتين (pair of dashes = extra information): on purpose, not by accident يعني deliberate = مقصود / متعمَّد.
- Some students were reluctant to try vocational courses, but Salma was eager to start.عكس: but + eager (متحمس). يبقى reluctant = متردد / مش عايز.
- Perishable foods, such as milk, fish and fresh fruit, must be kept cold.أمثلة: لبن وسمك وفاكهة كلها بتبوظ بسرعة. يبقى perishable = سريع التلف.
- The museum guide was so knowledgeable that she could answer every question.منطق الجملة: جاوبت على كل سؤال، يبقى knowledgeable = عندها معرفة كبيرة. وكمان الجذر knowledge.
- Sharing a post without checking it is irresponsible.أجزاء الكلمة: ir- (مش) + responsible (مسؤول) + -ible. يبقى = مش مسؤول / تصرف مستهتر.
- Sea levels are rising at an alarming rate.منطق: الكلمة بتوصف سرعة بتقلق. alarming = مقلق / مثير للقلق (من alarm = إنذار).
- Unlike fast fashion, slow fashion encourages people to buy fewer, durable clothes.عكس: fast fashion هدومه بتبوظ بسرعة، فالعكس durable = متين / بيعيش كتير.
علامات الترقيم بتساعدك
Punctuation often signals that the writer is explaining a word.
الكتّاب بيستخدموا علامات ترقيم معينة علشان يضيفوا شرح أو معلومة زيادة للكلمة. لو شفت العلامات دي بعد كلمة صعبة، غالبًا الشرح جاي:
| العلامة | وظيفتها هنا | مثال |
|---|---|---|
| pair of dashes (— … —) | معلومة زيادة (extra information) بتشرح | Methane — a gas far stronger than carbon dioxide — is released by landfill. |
| brackets ( … ) | معلومة زيادة | Many teens suffer from FOMO (the fear of missing out). |
| pair of commas ( , … , ) | معلومة زيادة | Biodiversity, the variety of plant and animal life, is falling. |
| colon ( : ) | شرح أو توضيح بعدها | The club had one rule: no phones. |
| inverted commas (" ") | اقتباس كلام حد (quotation)، أو تعبير مش بمعناه الحرفي، أو اسم مش الاسم الحقيقي | It was a "low-pressure" project, so nobody felt forced. |
إزاي تجاوب سؤال «closest in meaning to»؟ (5 خطوات)
- ارجع للنص واقرا الجملة اللي فيها الكلمة + الجملة اللي قبلها واللي بعدها.
- اعرف نوع الكلمة: اسم ولا فعل ولا صفة؟ (بعد a / the = اسم، بعد very / so = صفة، بعد فاعل = فعل).
From Hobby to Career
(1) When Ahmed told his friends that he had chosen a technical school, some of them looked at him with pity, as if he had failed. Ahmed, however, was confident about his decision. He had been repairing bicycles since the age of ten, and he wanted to turn that passion into a profession.
(2) At first, the course was demanding. Students spent long hours in workshops, and every task had to be precise: a single wrong measurement could ruin an engine. Ahmed often went home exhausted, but he never thought about quitting.
(3) His teacher, Mr Samir, became a mentor — someone who guided him, corrected his mistakes and believed in him. "Mistakes are not the end," he used to say. "They are the raw material of skill."
(4) Today, Ahmed is twenty-two and runs a small workshop that employs four young technicians. The friends who once pitied him now ask him for advice. "A skill is something nobody can take away from you," Ahmed says. "It is the most durable thing I own."
تفكيك الكلمات
| الكلمة | الدليل من النص | نوع الدليل | المعنى |
|---|---|---|---|
| pity (n) | as if he had failed | منطق الجملة | شفقة |
| confident (adj) | however (عكس نظرة الشفقة) + كان بيصلّح عجل من وهو عنده 10 سنين | عكس | واثق |
| demanding (adj) | long hours / exhausted | منطق + أمثلة | صعب ومحتاج مجهود |
| precise (adj) | a single wrong measurement could ruin an engine | شرح بعد الـ colon | دقيق جدًا |
| exhausted (adj) | long hours in workshops + but he never thought about quitting | منطق | مرهق جدًا |
| mentor (n) | — someone who guided him, corrected his mistakes — | تعريف بين شرطتين | مرشد / معلم ناصح |
| raw material (expression) | Mistakes … skill | تعبير مش حرفي | الأساس اللي بتتبني منه المهارة |
| durable (adj) | nobody can take away from you | منطق | دائم / بيعيش كتير |
لاحظ إن raw material في الأصل معناها «مادة خام» (زي القطن للقماش). هنا الكاتب استخدمها مجازًا: الأخطاء هي «المادة الخام» اللي بتتعمل منها المهارة. علشان كده المعنى in this context = الأساس أو نقطة البداية.
- ✗ بتختار المعنى من غير ما ترجع للنص. ← ✓ دايمًا ارجع للجملة نفسها، الكلمة ممكن يكون ليها معنى تاني هنا.
- ✗ «Find a word that means *tired*» وتكتب tiring. ← ✓ الكلمة لازم تكون نفس النوع ومن النص: exhausted.
- ✗ بتكتب كلمة من فقرة غير اللي السؤال حددها. ← ✓ لو السؤال قال «paragraph 2» دوّر فيها بس.
- ✗ بتكتب جملة كاملة لما السؤال طالب كلمة. ← ✓ اكتب الكلمة بالظبط زي ما هي في النص.
- ✗ بتخلط بين synonym (مرادف) وantonym (عكس). ← ✓ syn = same ، ant = against.

A Museum That Speaks
(1) For years, the small museum in the old town was almost empty. Its rooms were dark, its labels were tiny, and visitors left after a few minutes. Then a team of young volunteers decided to revive it.
(2) Their first step was simple: they replaced the long, technical labels with short stories about the people who had used each object. A clay pot was no longer just "Pot, 1200 BC". It became the cooking pot of a family who had lived by the Nile. Visitors who had once been indifferent suddenly became curious.
(3) The volunteers also created a hands-on corner, where children could touch copies of ancient tools. Because the original objects are fragile, they stayed behind glass, but the copies allowed visitors to feel the weight of history in their own hands.
(4) Within a year, the number of visitors had tripled. The museum had not bought a single new object. It had simply learned to tell its stories in a way that people could relate to.
