The Writer's Viewpoint and Tone
إزاي تعرف رأي الكاتب (viewpoint) ونبرته (tone) من كلماته، وتحكم إذا كان النص balanced ولا biased، وتكتب الإجابة بدليل.
الدرس ده عن إيه؟
The writer's viewpoint is what the writer thinks about the topic: for it, against it, or balanced. The tone is the writer's attitude as it appears in the words: for example critical, hopeful, neutral or angry.
الدرس ده بيعلّمك تجاوب على سؤالين مهمين في أي قطعة: الكاتب رأيه إيه؟ (viewpoint) وبيتكلم بأنهي «نبرة»؟ (tone).
في الكتاب: Unit 3: Echoes of the Past هدفها «Analyze historical narratives and identify the writer's viewpoint» و«identify tone, evaluative language, and selective framing in media texts» (المتاحف والتاريخ على السوشيال ميديا). وUnit 6: The Space We Share هدفها «identify tone and evaluative language in profiles and media texts». وكمان في Unit 1 بيسألك: «What do you think of the writer's view of social media? Is it balanced or biased?» وفي Unit 2 بتتابع mood and tone الراوي في قصة على النيل.
الفكرة ببساطة: «إيه» و«إزاي»
Viewpoint = WHAT the writer thinks. Tone = HOW the writer sounds while saying it.
| Viewpoint (وجهة النظر) | Tone (النبرة) | |
|---|---|---|
| بيجاوب على | الكاتب رأيه إيه؟ | الكاتب بيتكلم إزاي؟ حاسس بإيه؟ |
| الإجابة شكلها | The writer supports / opposes / has a balanced view of… | The tone is critical / hopeful / neutral… |
| بندوّر فين؟ | أول وآخر فقرة، الجمل اللي فيها رأي، المساحة اللي كل جانب واخدها | الصفات والأفعال (evaluative language)، علامات الترقيم، الـ intensifiers |
إزاي تعرف الـ Viewpoint؟ (5 علامات)
- أول فقرة وآخر فقرة: الكاتب غالبًا بيقول رأيه في الأول ويأكده في الآخر.
- جمل الرأي: I believe / In my view / should / must / it is clear that.
- الـ evaluative language: لو بيوصف حاجة بـ remarkable وinspiring يبقى معاها. لو بـ unfair وharmful يبقى ضدها.
- المساحة: الجانب اللي واخد فقرات أكتر وأدلة أقوى هو غالبًا رأي الكاتب.
- الـ concession (الاعتراف بالرأي التاني): «Although some argue that…, …». الكلام اللي بعد الـ concession هو رأي الكاتب الحقيقي.
- Although some people argue that ancient artefacts are safer in foreign museums, I believe they belong in their countries of origin.الجزء الأول = الرأي التاني (اعتراف). بعد الفاصلة = رأي الكاتب: لازم ترجع لبلدها.
- Social media can spread heritage quickly. However, it cannot replace professional documentation. However بتقولك: الرأي الحقيقي جاي بعدي. الكاتب شايف إن السوشيال ميديا مفيدة بس مش بديل.
- Some say the river should be used only for farming, while others want it protected for wildlife. Both needs are real.Balanced viewpoint: عرض الجانبين ومحسمش.
كلمات النبرة (Tone words) اللي لازم تعرفها
Use an adjective to describe tone. Then support it with a quotation.
| Tone | المعنى | بتظهر من كلمات زي |
|---|---|---|
| neutral / objective | محايد، من غير مشاعر | research shows, some, according to, may |
| critical | بينقد / مش موافق | unfair, fails to, problem, worrying |
| enthusiastic | متحمس جدًا | amazing, fantastic, can't wait, ! |
| hopeful / optimistic | متفائل | can make a difference, a brighter future, progress |
| pessimistic | متشائم | too late, hopeless, will never |
| concerned / worried | قلقان | alarming, at risk, threat, fragile |
| angry / outraged | غضبان | shameful, disgraceful, how dare, !!! |
| respectful / admiring | بيحترم ومعجب | remarkable, dedicated, inspiring |
| nostalgic | حنين للماضي | I remember, those days, used to |
| humorous | بيهزر | مواقف مضحكة، مبالغة لطيفة |
| sarcastic / ironic | بيتريق (بيقول عكس قصده) | Oh great, another "amazing" sale! |
| persuasive | بيحاول يقنعك | you should, we must, rhetorical questions |
| informative | بيقدّم معلومات | facts, dates, numbers, explanations |
- Tone = إحساس الكاتب (أو الراوي) تجاه الموضوع.
- Mood = الإحساس اللي القارئ بيحس بيه وهو بيقرا.
- ممكن الكاتب يبقى tone بتاعه calm والقارئ يحس بـ suspense. والنبرة ممكن تتغير جوه القطعة (زي الراوي في قصة Unit 2 اللي إحساسه بيتغير).
Selective framing: الكاتب بيختار إيه يوريك
Writers (and museums) choose which details to include or leave out. This selective framing shapes our view, so it is part of the writer's viewpoint.
الكتاب في Unit 3 بيقول إن المتحف «storyteller» (حكّاء): لما بيختار القطع اللي يعرضها وإزاي يوصفها، بيعمل narrative (حكاية). نفس الكلام في المقالات: الكاتب اللي بيذكر فوايد بس ويسكت عن العيوب، viewpoint بتاعه واضح حتى لو ماقالش «I think».
علشان كده لما تتسأل «Is the writer's view balanced or biased?» اسأل: هل ذكر الجانب التاني؟ هل استخدم hedging؟ هل الأدلة من الجانبين؟
قطعتين للتطبيق: نفس الموضوع، رأيين مختلفين

Text A — Coming Home
For more than two centuries, some of Egypt's most remarkable treasures have been displayed thousands of kilometres from the land where they were made. The Rosetta Stone, the key that unlocked hieroglyphs, still sits behind glass in London. Visitors there admire it, but how many of them realise that most Egyptian children will never see it with their own eyes?
Some argue that great international museums keep artefacts safe for all humanity. That may once have been true. Today, however, Egypt has world-class museums of its own, with modern technology to protect and display its heritage. It is time for these objects to return home, where they can tell their story to the people whose ancestors created them.
Text B — A Museum for the World
Large international museums attract millions of visitors every year from every continent. In a single afternoon, a student can walk from ancient Egypt to ancient China and see how different civilisations developed side by side. Supporters believe this shared space helps people understand that history belongs to everyone.
Critics, on the other hand, point out that many objects were taken during periods when their countries had little power to refuse. They argue that keeping these objects abroad continues an old injustice. Both arguments raise serious questions, and the answer may differ from one object to another. Perhaps the solution lies in long-term loans, shared research and digital copies, rather than a simple "keep" or "return".
إزاي بييجي في الأسئلة؟ (أمثلة محلولة)
سؤال 1: What is the writer's viewpoint in Text A? Support your answer with evidence.
Answer: The writer believes that Egyptian artefacts should be returned to Egypt. For example, he says, "It is time for these objects to return home."
الدليل في آخر فقرة (المكان المعتاد للرأي)، وكمان بعد however بعد ما اعترف بالرأي التاني («Some argue that…»).
سؤال 2: How would you describe the tone of Text B? Give evidence.
Answer: The tone is balanced and neutral. The writer presents both sides ("Supporters believe…" / "Critics, on the other hand…") and uses hedging such as "may" and "Perhaps".
سؤال 3: Is Text A balanced or biased? Explain.
Answer: Text A is one-sided (persuasive). It mentions the opposite view in only one sentence and quickly rejects it. It also uses emotive language and a rhetorical question ("how many of them realise…?") to make the reader feel that the situation is unfair. However, it is not extremely biased, because it uses hedging ("That may once have been true") and avoids insults.
لاحظ: persuasive مش لازم يبقى biased بطريقة وحشة. النص A بيدافع عن رأي، بس بأدب ومن غير مبالغة كبيرة.
- تكتب رأيك انت بدل رأي الكاتب ← السؤال عن الكاتب: The writer believes…
- Viewpoint: The writer supports / opposes / has a balanced view of ___. This is clear when he says, "___".
- Tone: The tone is ___. For example, the words "___" show that the writer feels ___.
- Balanced or biased: The text is ___ because it ___. For instance, "___".

Show answer
It chooses details that support returning the objects (the Rosetta Stone "behind glass in London", Egyptian children who "will never see it", Egypt's "world-class museums") and gives the other side only one sentence. It leaves out points that support the other view, such as the millions of international visitors who see the objects abroad. — ده selective framing: الكاتب بيختار التفاصيل اللي بتخدم رأيه ويسيب الباقي.
C. Read this short profile (Unit 6 theme), then answer.
The Night Guard of the Turtles
Every summer night, while most of his village is asleep, Ahmed walks along the dark beach with a small torch and a notebook. He is looking for sea turtles, which come ashore to lay their eggs. For years, many nests were destroyed by dogs, bright lights and careless visitors. Ahmed could have ignored the problem. Instead, he trained a team of young volunteers, put up simple fences around the nests and persuaded local cafés to switch off their lights after midnight. Last season, hundreds of baby turtles reached the sea safely. "They are tiny," Ahmed says with a smile, "but they carry a big lesson: we share this beach with them."
11. What is the writer's attitude towards Ahmed?
Show answer
Admiring / respectful — the writer shows his dedication ("Every summer night") and his success ("hundreds of baby turtles reached the sea safely").12. How does the tone change between the sentence "many nests were destroyed…" and the end of the profile?
Show answer
It moves from concerned (nests "destroyed") to hopeful and warm ("reached the sea safely", "with a smile").13. Find a phrase that shows Ahmed's determination.
Show answer
"Ahmed could have ignored the problem. Instead, he trained a team…"14. What message does the writer want readers to take from the profile?
Show answer
That ordinary people can protect wildlife, and that humans share natural spaces with other species ("we share this beach with them").
D. Match each sentence with its tone: neutral / critical / enthusiastic / pessimistic / nostalgic / sarcastic.

Show answer
enthusiastic — fantastic + can't wait + !17. The report found that 40% of the food was thrown away.
Show answer
neutral — رقم ومعلومة من غير مشاعر.18. Oh wonderful, another "limited offer" that lasts all year.
Show answer
sarcastic — بيقول wonderful وهو قصده العكس.19. The council has once again failed to fix the problem, and residents deserve better.
Show answer
critical — failed + deserve better.20. Nothing we do will ever save the oceans now.
Show answer
pessimistic — Nothing / ever / now = مفيش أمل.
E. Writing and JRE.
21. Rewrite this sentence in a neutral tone: "Fast fashion brands are greedy monsters destroying our planet!"
Show answer
مثال: Some fast fashion brands may contribute to environmental problems, such as textile waste.22. Rewrite this sentence in a hopeful tone: "The river is polluted and nobody cares."
Show answer
مثال: The river is polluted, but more and more local volunteers are working to clean it.23. "Social media is a useful tool for sharing heritage, but it cannot replace professional documentation." What is the viewpoint in this sentence? Is it balanced? Justify.
Show answer
مثال: (Claim) The viewpoint is that social media is helpful but limited, and it is quite balanced. (Reason) This is because it admits a benefit before giving a limitation. (Evidence) It calls social media "a useful tool" and then uses "but" to explain that it "cannot replace professional documentation".
The two texts discuss the same issue, but their viewpoints and tones are different. The writer of Text A clearly believes that Egyptian artefacts should return home, as he states, "It is time for these objects to return home." His tone is persuasive and concerned, especially when he uses the rhetorical question "how many of them realise that most Egyptian children will never see it?" In contrast, the writer of Text B has a balanced viewpoint. He presents supporters and critics equally and uses hedging such as "may" and "Perhaps", which creates a neutral and thoughtful tone. Therefore, Text A aims to persuade, while Text B aims to help readers weigh both sides.
